Cappadocia! Wow! Sabia, a volunteer in Uganda, had told us to go specifically to Cappadocia, where the 'fairy chimneys' are. Cappadocia is another ancient town, this time not with ruins, but with caves, carved into volcanic rock! The towers are all tall, some with hats on top of them, which are the ideal chimneys. This time a guy named Effe was our guide.  Not only were there dwellings above ground, but our first stop was . . .

underground shelter - miles and miles of hideouts. When the Romans invaded Cappadocia, the Christian people were being slaughtered. They had carved out an underground maze with CHISELS, which took generations, and thank goodness they did. Chisels meaning sharpened rocks. People would stay here for months on end, and go for food and water at night. There was even a tunnel to a neighboring town just in case the people got into trouble. Effe explained how they used the kitchen, doors, communication system and everything else. They even had a church, and two handles carved into stone, like crucifixion, if anybody wanted to experience what it was like to be Jesus.
After that we went to lunch, and visited a cave church near the restaurant. The people had painted the church with all different scenes from the New Testament, like Mary holding baby Jesus, Jesus bringing people back to life, Jesus being crucified... Yup. The cool thing is, they'd have to use all-natural paints.
Then we went to a section of Cappadocia where we could climb through the caves! Birch and I had such a great time! It was fun, but it would be weird to LIVE in a cave! Well, we got to for a night, because our hotel was a cave, but complete with shower, comfortable beds and breakfast included.
