We are in a town called Napier. The city has a very sad history. In 1930 there was an earthquake that lasted about 3 minutes. It may not sound like a lot but imagine the ground shaking for that amount of time. It would seem like forever. Houses crumbled and over 1000 people died. The harbour sucked out to sea and never came back, leaving something crazy like 5000 acres of land behind. What wasn't turned to rubble was soon destroyed by a fire lasting two days. Lot of people died from that as well . . .

A ship that had been sailing to Napier was contacted (they had some kind of access to a radio, but all the other ways of communication were gone). The ship sailed in and supplied the town with medical care for the wounded. All the dead were buried. After they sent the surviving and hurt people off to relatives or friends all over New Zealand, a community group set to work on rebuilding the city.
They decided that since they had to start from scratch they might as well make it good. They choose the theme of Art Deco, a very classy type of style which is very flowing and has precise colours. I'd say it's pretty old-fashioned and not exactly my favorite, but of course it's old-fashioned, it was rebuilt in the 1930s. I'll remind you that acrylic paint was not invented back then and all the buildings were grey stone. Once acrylic paint was invented and a bunch of other cities had it, tourists started coming and saying that it was ugly and dull. The town jumped and started painting. It still looks pretty new, but imagine when they first painted it: the smell of paint wafted throughout the city, and you just simply couldn't get away from it. Overall it is an amazing city.
As I am writing this, it is October 29. Today is Cocoa's birthday (Cocoa is my poodle) and when you read this please sing Happy-Birthday for her. Kris and Bob, please tell Cocoa I love and miss her very much (plus cuddle her extra extra with a kiss on top). Happy Birthday, Cocoa!

Yours truly,
