  Last night we saw what Birch and I call bacon and egg mudflats. I don't know a lot about the scientific side, but I heard mom mention that the earth underneath is 300 degrees. The mud bubbles and boils and burps, splattering all over. Some explode going up high, some go to the sides. The boardwalk fence is caked with dried mud, which means that some go really, really far and you better be careful.
     Today we decided to explore the Wai-o-tapu, a place where the minerals come into a pool and form various colours  . . .

Green = Colloidal sulphur/ferrous salts
Orange = Antimony
Purple = Manganese oxide
White = Silica
 Yellow = Sulphur
Red = Iron oxide
Black = Sulphur and carbon
I don't blame you if you didn't understand half the words I just wrote.
      My favourite pools were The Champange Pool because it has turquoise water and red rock around the rim. It's the cover on the Rough Guide To New Zealand. My second favourite was a Lime green pool. I'm not joking - it was pure bright green.
      After that we went in the thermal pools. So relaxing. But we didn't put our head under water because you could see little bits of grass and muck and… who knows what else? Overall it was a great day topped off with an amazing dinner.

Wow. I love your blog, Allegra! It's really interesting to read, and the photos are amazing. I hope your finger is healing well.

Can I share it with classes at school? They may do a blog project, and yours could be a good example for them!

Allegra I LOVE this blog. And these mudflats are so interesting. But why bacon and egg flats? Scrambled or fried.....?
Sad I didn't get to see you at your cot before you left, but I'm so excited to follow your adventures on here!
