__There is a certain alley in Pushkar where all the fried food is and there are at least ten dogs there begging for food. They are all starving, and there was one that just made me ache when I saw it. It was just a couple weeks old, and you could see his ribs. One day he couldn't stand up, and the next day he had disappeared. A lot of dogs fight and one time a dog was biting a puppy at his throat declaring himself the Alpha Dog. The puppy stumbled away, slightly hurt, but in good shape compared to some of the others.
On the bus today . . .
_ we saw a puppy, only about a year old, who was missing a foot. It was still bloody and he had to hobble everywhere. I wonder what happened? Mom suggested he either got into a fight with one of the bigger dogs, or he was run over. Back in the alley in Pushkar the dogs like to sleep in the warm coals of the oven. It doesn't burn them but prevents them from freezing during the night. Last night we walked through there and heard terrible yelps. I think one dog was protecting it's territory. Whenever I think of dogs in India it makes me want to cry, they suffer so much. The streets just aren't the right place for a pup to grow up.
